Shell GO+ rewards fuel and shop purchases at Shell stations with points redeemable against fuel and forecourt products. The referral is simple, and the one condition attached to it is the one everybody misses.

Shell GO+ awards 250 points for a successful referral. The condition that everyone leaves out is what makes it successful: the person you referred has to register and then transact at least once at a Shell station. Downloading the app, creating a GO+ account and never buying fuel pays neither of you anything.

That single requirement explains most unpaid Shell referrals. It also changes who is worth referring — someone who does not drive, or who fills up elsewhere, will never complete it regardless of how enthusiastically they install the app.

The person you refer must not already be a Shell GO+ member. Existing members cannot be re-referred.

The nature of the reward is worth being clear about, because "250 free points" reads like money and is not. Shell's own terms state that points have no value until they are redeemed, and that they cannot be sold, traded or exchanged for cash. They buy things at participating Shell sites — fuel and forecourt products — as defined by Shell from time to time. If the reward you had in mind is not stocked at the station you use, the points are not worth what you assumed.

Two further restrictions that matter in practice. Points cannot be transferred between accounts or combined, so a household cannot pool a partner's balance with yours to reach a redemption. And no points are earned on items bought using redeemed points, which closes the loop on compounding.

Finally, geography. The Shell Asia app covers India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Oman, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, and what a point actually buys varies by market and by station. The "free ₹100 petrol" and specific product claims circulating online are India-specific campaign snapshots rather than a standing exchange rate. Check the rewards catalogue in your own app and market before assuming a value.
