Unacademy is one of India's largest online learning platforms, offering live and recorded classes for IIT-JEE, NEET, UPSC, SSC, banking and other competitive examinations. Its referral programme has been advertised with a laptop and an Amazon voucher of up to ₹5,000.

The first thing to understand is what a headline like that usually means, because the pattern is consistent across the industry rather than specific to Unacademy.

Physical hardware in a referral offer is almost always the top prize of a tiered structure. Somebody who refers one friend does not receive a laptop; somebody who refers a great many might. The ladder underneath is where nearly everyone stands, and its rungs — the reward for a first successful referral, the reward for a fifth — are what determine whether the programme is worth your effort. Those numbers are rarely in the headline, because a base rate is a less compelling advertisement than a laptop.

Finally, some context about the market this sits in, which applies to Unacademy, Testbook and every competitor. Indian competitive exam preparation carries enormous emotional and financial weight. Candidates often prepare across several attempts and several years, families frequently fund it at real cost, and the sector's marketing leans hard on success stories that are, by definition, drawn from the small proportion who succeed. A referral in that context is not like recommending a shopping app. If you rate the teaching, say so; that is a genuine service to someone who is about to spend money either way. Just be aware that the reward arrives when they spend it.
