Genie Says

CoinMarketCap, the most-referenced price-tracking site in crypto, is owned by Binance — announced 2 April 2020, closed 31 March, for a reported $400 million. Binance publicly pledged editorial independence; industry observers raised conflict concerns about rankings, Binance-pair volumes and BNB visibility, and Binance subsequently rose to the top of CoinMarketCap's exchange rankings. We report the assurance, the criticism and the outcome without alleging manipulation. The structural point is that a data source owned by a market participant has an interest in what the data shows. This is the fifth industry with the pattern, after VPN reviews, mattress reviews, survey panels and Indian travel — and each had an unowned alternative worth naming. Here it is CoinGecko. Rankings and volume carry the conflict; spot prices largely do not.

How to Use a Coinmarketcap Referral Code

Know who owns the source

Binance acquired CoinMarketCap in April 2020 for a reported $400 million, with a public pledge of editorial independence.

Separate the price from the rankings

Aggregated spot prices are hard to distort and generally agree. Rankings, trust scores and listing visibility are judgements.

Find the unowned alternative

CoinGecko publicly pledged independence when this deal was announced. Every industry we have examined has had one to name.

Use both and compare

Where two independently-owned sources agree, the number is probably right. Where they disagree, you have learned something.

Why Choose Coinmarketcap?

A participant owns the scoreboard

The concern is structural — the incentive should be visible to whoever relies on the output, regardless of conduct.

Binance rose to the top of its exchange rankings

Reported after the acquisition. We state the assurance, the criticism and the outcome, and allege nothing beyond them.

Fifth industry with the same pattern

After VPN reviews, mattress reviews, survey panels and Indian travel — and each time there was one independent name.

Volume is the industry's most manipulated figure

Which is precisely why "adjusted volume" metrics exist. Treat rankings and volume with more caution than prices.

About Coinmarketcap

It is the most-cited price source in crypto, and it belongs to one of the exchanges it ranks. That is a structural fact, not an accusation.

CoinMarketCap is the most-referenced price-tracking site in cryptocurrency. It is owned by Binance.

The acquisition was announced on 2 April 2020, having closed on 31 March, for a sum reported at around $400 million. Binance's then chief executive publicly committed that CoinMarketCap would operate independently, with no interference in rankings or data methodology, on the reasoning that any loss of neutrality would destroy the asset's value.

Industry reaction at the time was sceptical, and the concerns were specific: potential favouritism toward Binance-listed tokens in rankings, the treatment of reported trading volumes for Binance pairs, and prioritisation of the BNB ecosystem in visibility and metrics. Following the acquisition, Binance rose to the top of CoinMarketCap's exchange rankings.

We are reporting three things and alleging that none of them add up to manipulation: the assurance was given, the criticism was raised, and the ranking outcome is observable. What a reader should take from it is structural rather than accusatory — and that is the more useful lesson anyway.

The structural point: a data source owned by a participant in the market it measures has an interest in what the data shows. This holds whether or not anyone ever acts on it. It is why audit independence rules and research-analyst conflict disclosures exist at all — not because misconduct is assumed, but because the incentive should be visible to the person relying on the output.

This project has now found the same pattern in five different industries, and the useful response is identical every time.

VPN reviews — Kape Technologies owns PIA, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and ZenMate and a collection of VPN review websites. The independent alternative: Proton VPN.
Mattress reviews — Pillar4 Media owns Sleepopolis, Mattress Advisor, Mattress Nerd and Mattress Clarity.
Survey sites — Prodege owns Swagbucks, ySense and Upromise, so "join several survey sites" often meant joining one company several times. The independent alternative: Ipsos i-Say.
Indian travel — MakeMyTrip owns Goibibo and redBus. The independent alternative: EaseMyTrip.
Crypto market data — Binance owns CoinMarketCap. The independent alternative: CoinGecko, which publicly pledged its independence when this deal was announced.

The reusable habit is not "distrust the owned one". It is: find the one that is not owned, and use both. Where two independently-owned sources agree, the number is probably right. Where they disagree, you have learned something more valuable than either figure alone. Naming the unowned alternative is more useful than describing the conflict — and in every one of these five industries there has been one to name.

What to check specifically when comparing crypto data sources:

Exchange rankings and "trust scores", which are the most editorially loaded outputs on any such site — a ranking is a judgement, not a measurement.
Reported trading volume, historically the most manipulated figure in the industry and the reason "adjusted volume" metrics exist at all.
New listing visibility, since being featured is commercially valuable and the criteria are rarely published in full.
Prices themselves are the least contentious part. A spot price aggregated across venues is hard to distort meaningfully and generally agrees across sources. The conflict lives in the rankings and the curation, not the price ticker — which is worth saying, because the alternative is a counsel of general suspicion that helps nobody.

On any referral offer here: whatever a data platform pays is secondary to the reason you would use it, which is to make better decisions. A price source is not a product to choose for a signup bonus. Choose it for whether you can trust the output, then treat any bonus as incidental.
