"Free up to a limit" is the accurate description, and the limit is where the offer actually lives. A first-ride credit is a fixed amount, typically set near an average short urban fare. Below it, the journey genuinely costs nothing. Above it, you pay the difference — and on a long airport run or a cross-city trip, the covered share can be small.

The interaction with surge is the part worth internalising, because it applies to every ride credit in this batch and runs against instinct. Demand pricing raises the fare; the cap does not move. So the credit covers proportionally less on a Friday night, during rain, at the end of a match, or at an airport at 6am — precisely the journeys people save a free-ride code for. The right use of a capped ride credit is an ordinary journey at an ordinary time, where the same fixed amount covers the whole fare instead of a fraction of an inflated one.

Two things specific to this market that are worth checking, because they change what a credit covers:

Vehicle category matters. Autos and bike taxis are priced very differently from cars, and a fixed credit that covers a short auto ride entirely may cover a modest share of a car journey over the same distance. If maximising the credit is the goal, the cheaper category uses it more completely.

Fees and tolls sit outside. Booking or convenience fees, airport charges, tolls and any waiting charge are typically applied beyond the discount, so — as with the food delivery offers in this export — the honest comparison is the total payable with the code against the total payable without it, not the discount line displayed at checkout.

On the driver side, and this site has repeatedly found the two conflated: a platform's driver programme is an entirely different proposition from a passenger referral, and anyone arriving here to earn by driving should evaluate it as work rather than as a reward. The UK Supreme Court's reasoning in Uber BV v Aslam [2021] UKSC 5 — that drivers are workers, and are working whenever logged in and available, given that the platform fixed pay, set fares and dictated terms — is the clearest available framework for thinking about what that work actually is, whatever the jurisdiction.

And the standing point: ride credit is not money. It cannot be withdrawn, it applies only within the app, and it expires — frequently sooner than people expect. Since this is a first-ride offer specifically, the credit is also single-use: whatever is left below the cap is not carried forward, which is a further argument for spending it on a journey that uses most of it rather than a token trip.
