Zavvi offers credit for referrals. The more useful thing to know is that the Zavvi you buy from today is a different company from the one whose name is above the door.

The history is the interesting part, and it generalises. Zavvi began as a high-street entertainment chain. That business entered administration, and THG bought it and relaunched it as an online-only retailer. The name continued; the company that built it did not.

"Bought out of administration" is one of the most common structures in online retail, and it is worth understanding properly because the phrasing hides what actually happened. When a retailer fails, an administrator sells whatever has value. The brand name, the domain, the customer database and the goodwill are assets, and they are frequently the only assets worth buying. A purchaser acquires those and starts a new company to trade under them. What the purchaser generally does not acquire is the failed company's liabilities — which is precisely why the deal is attractive.

The concrete consequences for a shopper, which is where this stops being corporate trivia:

Gift cards and credit notes from the old company are usually worthless. They are debts of the failed entity, and holders join the queue of unsecured creditors. This is the single most common way ordinary people lose money in a retail administration, and it is why an unused gift card is a worse thing to hold than cash for reasons that have nothing to do with expiry.

Warranties and guarantees may not transfer. A manufacturer warranty is unaffected because it is the manufacturer's obligation, but a retailer's own extended guarantee generally is not.

Open orders and refunds at the moment of failure are the administrator's problem, not the buyer's.

And the trading style is not a continuity guarantee. A familiar name signals to a shopper that a business has been around for years. After a purchase out of administration it signals only that the name has. The operation, the systems, the fulfilment and the customer service may be entirely different — better or worse, but different.

None of that is a criticism of Zavvi today. A relaunched brand under a well-capitalised owner is frequently a more reliable proposition than the failing business it replaced, and THG is a substantial operator. The point is narrower: judge the current operation on current evidence — recent delivery and returns experience — rather than on the age of the name.

On ownership, THG also owns LookFantastic, Glossybox, Cult Beauty and Myprotein, four of which appear elsewhere in this export. That makes it the largest single-owner group found in this set, and the standing implication applies: if you compare prices or delivery across those sites, you are not sampling independent retailers.

On the referral itself: store credit is not cash. It can only be spent at Zavvi, cannot be withdrawn, and is worth nothing to someone who was not going to shop there. Check the minimum spend, the expiry, and whether it stacks with sale prices — entertainment retail discounts heavily and often, and credit excluded from promotions is credit that is hard to use well.
