If the people in your earning team never finish their identity verification — because they lost interest, because their documents were rejected, because they no longer use the app — the referral portion of your balance stays where it is. Indefinitely. There is no mechanism to compel them, no substitute verification you can perform, and no expiry that eventually releases it.

This is worth dwelling on because it is genuinely unusual. Across every referral programme documented on this site, the failure modes are things you can influence: a window you can meet, a threshold you can encourage, a purchase you can time. Pi is the only one where your payout depends on an administrative action by a third party that you have no way to make happen. People who referred large numbers of casual users years ago are sitting on referral balances they may never be able to move.

The practical implication for anyone still referring: a referral is only worth something if that person actually verifies. Referring twenty people who install the app and drift away is worth nothing at all, while referring two who complete KYC is worth something real. If you are going to refer at all, follow through on the verification rather than the install.

On the state of the project itself: the firewall was removed on 20 February 2025 and Open Mainnet is live, with Pi transferable and traded on some exchanges. A Second Migration phase followed Pi Day 2026, specifically to move additional balances including referral mining rewards that had not been processed earlier — so balances stuck from earlier rounds have had a route opened, subject to the same KYC condition.

Two operational notes. Two-factor authentication must be completed before any transfer to Mainnet. And some users have reported their accounts reverting to tentative KYC status after completing the first migration, which is worth checking before assuming your own verification is settled.
