Organic Harvest Referral Code

Organic Harvest offers a free facial kit for referrals. The word doing the work in its name is "organic", and it carries far less weight in cosmetics than most people assume.

Organic Harvest sells skincare, haircare, bodycare and essential oils positioned around organic ingredients. Its referral offers a free Vitamin C facial home kit.

"Organic" is the one adjective in this batch that means something somewhere, which is exactly why it needs care.

In food, organic is a certification regime. There are standards, accredited certifying bodies, audits, and a defined mark — a farmer cannot simply describe produce as organic. In cosmetics the position is much looser. There is no equivalent single mandatory framework governing the word on a personal care product, so a product may carry organic positioning on the strength of some organic-certified ingredients within a formulation that is largely conventional.

That produces the question worth asking, which almost nobody does: organic to what extent? Certification in cosmetics, where it exists, is typically granted by voluntary private standards and applies at the ingredient level or to a stated percentage of the formulation. The honest questions are:

Which certifying body, and is the mark on the product or on a supplier's input?
What percentage of the formulation is certified organic? A product can be truthfully described as containing certified organic ingredients while those ingredients are a small fraction of it.
Does the certification cover the whole product or one hero ingredient?

None of that is an accusation against this brand or any other. It is the structure of the category, and it means the word alone conveys much less than a shopper reasonably assumes — which is the same conclusion this batch reaches about "natural", "chemical-free" and "toxin-free", none of which has any legal definition in Indian cosmetics regulation at all.

What organic does not tell you, and this is the more important point for anyone choosing skincare:

It says nothing about whether the product works. Cosmetics regulation covers safety, composition and labelling. It does not require a product to demonstrate a benefit, and organic certification concerns how ingredients were grown or produced rather than what they do on skin.

It says nothing about irritation. Plant-derived does not mean gentle — essential oils and botanical extracts are among the more common causes of contact irritation and sensitisation in cosmetics, and a fragranced organic product can be considerably harsher on reactive skin than a plain synthetic one. This is worth knowing precisely because it runs against the intuition the word creates.

So the practical approach, the same as on our Mamaearth page: read the INCI list, which is the only part of the packaging with a fixed meaning. Check whether the ingredient you are buying the product for appears above or below the preservative — below places it under 1% — and check for anything you personally react to, since an individual reaction is the commonest bad outcome in skincare and the most expensive, because the product becomes unusable.

And patch test anything new, particularly anything botanical or fragranced. A reaction on a small area costs nothing; a reaction on your face costs the product and a fortnight.
