Getaround's closure goes further than a changed figure or a changed owner — the company itself is being dissolved.

There is no Getaround referral programme, because there is effectively no longer a Getaround.

- The US car-sharing business shut down in February 2025 — abruptly, stopping new rentals immediately, with the wind-down substantially completed by the end of that year. The stated reason was a lack of liquidity despite restructuring.
- Its HyreCar business, acquired in 2023, was shut down with it.
- The company retreated to its European markets, and in 2026 arranged the sale of those operations and began dissolving and liquidating the remaining corporate entity.

Anybody holding Getaround rental credit when the US business stopped held a claim on a business that had run out of liquidity, and rental credit is not a bank deposit — it has no protection scheme behind it. The standing advice to spend platform credit promptly rather than accumulating it was never really about expiry dates; it was about exactly this kind of outcome.

There is a second group a closure like this affects that a referral page would ordinarily never mention: the car owners. Peer-to-peer car-sharing has two sides, and the hosts — people who listed their own vehicles — were relying on the platform for income and, in many cases, for the insurance that made letting a stranger drive their car possible at all. An abrupt shutdown removes both at once. That is the part of a platform closure that costs people most, and it rarely appears in any discussion of referral rewards.

The lesson generalises to any marketplace: if a platform sits between you and your income, your insurance, or your money, its financial health is your problem too. For a rider that means not accumulating credit. For anybody earning through a platform it means something larger — do not let a single marketplace become the only route to your income or the only source of your cover, and know how quickly you could withdraw earnings if you needed to.

Shared transport more broadly has been through a wave of consolidation and closures, heavily funded on growth expectations that did not materialise; car-sharing, scooter and bike-subscription operators alike have merged, exited markets, or shut down.

- What happens to a booking already paid for if the service stops?
- For a renter, what is the excess and who handles a claim? The answer decides the real cost of a cheap rental far more than the headline daily rate.
