A recorded course is made once and sold many times. A live tutor can only be in one place, and that difference explains everything about the price.

Live tutoring and recorded courses are sold side by side and are not the same product. The economics explain the price difference, and the price difference explains what to check.

A recorded course is made once and sold indefinitely. The cost of the ten-thousandth sale is approximately zero, which is why recorded material can be priced low and discounted aggressively — and why platforms selling it push volume and subscriptions.

A live tutor can only be in one place at a time. Every hour sold is an hour of somebody's life, and it cannot be resold to anyone else. That is why live tutoring costs more, and why it is not discounted in the same way — a 70% off sale on a live hour would mean paying a person 70% less for it.

Which produces the observation that matters: in live tutoring, the platform is the smaller half of what you are buying. The tutor is the product.

So the questions that decide value are almost entirely about the individual, not the service:

Who specifically will teach, and can you see their background before committing? A platform that assigns "a tutor" rather than a named person is selling you an average, and averages in teaching are wide.
Can you change tutor without penalty if the fit is wrong? Fit matters more in one-to-one teaching than in any other educational format — the same tutor can be excellent for one student and ineffective for another, and this is not a failure of either.
Is it genuinely one-to-one, or small-group? Both work; they are priced differently and suit different students, and the distinction is sometimes blurred in marketing.
What happens to a missed session — rescheduling terms, notice periods and whether an unused session is lost.
Is there any assessment of what the student actually needs before teaching starts? Good tutoring begins with diagnosis, and a service that starts teaching immediately is guessing.

And the honest point about tutoring generally, which no platform will lead with: the binding constraint is usually not explanation but practice. A student who does not understand a topic after one good explanation frequently understands it after attempting twenty questions on it. Tutoring is most valuable where it diagnoses a specific misunderstanding and then sets the right work, and least valuable where it becomes a scheduled hour of listening.

The practical test after four or five sessions: can the student do problems unaided that they could not do before? That is measurable in ordinary schoolwork, and it is a better indicator than either the student's enjoyment or the tutor's manner — both of which are pleasant and neither of which is evidence.

On the referral: ₹1,000, flat.

That is a clean structure and worth crediting. It is not a percentage of what your friend spends — so you have no interest in how many hours they book — and it is not a voucher requiring further spending with the issuer. One thing to establish before sharing it: the qualifying event. Does the ₹1,000 arrive when the referred student registers, books a first session, or completes a paid package? The trigger, not the amount, decides whether a referral pays — and in tutoring specifically, ask whether a refund or cancellation reverses it, since sessions are commonly cancellable.
