Course Hero Referral Code

Before you upload anything to earn unlocks, know what a federal jury decided about that library five months ago — and what uploading your course materials can mean for you personally.

Course Hero is a study-resource platform. Its library consists of documents contributed by users, and access works two ways: you subscribe, or you earn "Unlocks" by uploading academic materials of your own — notes, syllabi, assignments, quizzes, past papers. The company rebranded as Learneo in late 2022, and the group also includes QuillBot, Scribbr and CliffsNotes.

The reason this page leads with litigation rather than with a $5 referral bonus is that the upload-and-unlock mechanism has just been tested in a United States federal court, and the result is recent enough that almost nothing else written about Course Hero reflects it.

In Post University Inc. v. Learneo, Inc., in the District of Connecticut, a nine-day jury trial began on 17 February 2026. On 4 March 2026 the jury returned a verdict of $75,375,114.85 in the university's favour. Part of that award — $36,450,000 — came from 1,458 findings of violation of DMCA § 1202(a), the provision on false copyright management information, assessed at the statutory maximum of $25,000 per violation. The evidence the jury heard was that Course Hero removed the university's copyright management information from materials and replaced it with its own logos, banners, watermarks and copyright notices, and that the rebranded material was then placed behind a paywall and monetised through subscriptions and document Unlocks.

Two things follow for anyone reading this page.

First, about the platform. A $75 million verdict does not close a business, and Course Hero remains operational. But it does tell you something concrete about how the library was assembled, established through evidence at trial rather than through allegation. If you have wondered why a document with your institution's name on it is available on a commercial subscription site, that question has now been litigated.

Second, and more immediately, about you. The unlock mechanism asks users to upload academic materials. Much of what a student holds is not theirs to distribute: assignment briefs, exam papers, lecture slides and case studies are typically the copyright of the institution or the academic who wrote them. Uploading them to earn unlocks is a distribution decision made by you, in your account, under your name.

There are two separate consequences. Institutions increasingly treat unauthorised uploading of course materials as academic misconduct in its own right — separate from any question of cheating — and universities actively monitor these platforms for their own content. And the copyright in the material belongs to somebody, which the Post University verdict makes vivid.

So the honest advice on the referral: a $5 bonus is not the consideration here. If you use the platform, subscribe rather than paying with uploads, because the subscription costs money and the uploads can cost you something harder to quantify. And if you are looking for study material at all, your institution's own library and past-paper repositories carry no such question.

Nothing on this page is about the students who use these sites, most of whom are looking for a worked example at midnight before a deadline. It is about knowing what the currency is before you spend it.
