One half of this is straightforwardly good value. The other half depends entirely on rules your university sets, not on anything Zookal does.

Zookal does two quite different things, and they deserve separate answers.

1. Textbook rental, sale and buyback — where the value is unambiguous.

Students can rent a textbook for a semester at a fraction of the purchase price, and there is a buyback programme for selling used books back. Savings on course materials are claimed up to 70%.

This is one of the genuinely good deals documented in this project, and the reason is structural. A university textbook is a depreciating asset you need for four months. Buying one means paying the full price for a temporary need and then owning something with a thin resale market and a new edition arriving to destroy its value. Renting matches the cost to the period of use, which is exactly right for the product.

Our Cashify page makes the same argument about phones from the other direction — residual value is worth more than any discount — and textbooks are the case where it applies most sharply, because edition churn is deliberate and rapid.

Three things decide whether renting actually saves you money:

Whether the edition matters. Lecturers frequently accept the previous edition, in which case a used older copy can be cheaper than any rental. Ask before assuming, since the difference is often only reordered problem sets.
Whether you will need it after the course. For a subject in your specialism, owning may be right. For a compulsory unit outside it, renting is almost always right.
Total cost including return shipping and late fees, which is where rental economics quietly change. Establish the return date and the penalty before renting, because a late fee on a cheap rental can exceed the saving.

2. Textbook solutions and shared notes — where the question is not about Zookal at all.

Zookal also sells step-by-step textbook solutions — worked answers to the end-of-chapter problems in published textbooks — and runs a peer-to-peer marketplace where students buy and sell notes.

Here is the honest position, and it needs care.

A solutions library is not an essay mill, and this project draws that distinction deliberately. Our TutorBin page addresses a service marketing completed assessed work produced to order for a named student — which raises a specific legal question in England. A library of worked answers to published textbook problems is a different thing: it is a reference, of the same kind as a solutions manual, which has existed as long as textbooks have.

But that does not make it safe to use however you like, and the deciding rule is not a law — it is your institution's.

Every university sets its own academic integrity policy, and they differ substantially on exactly this. The questions that matter:

Is the work assessed? Using a worked solution to understand a problem you are studying is learning. Copying a worked solution into homework that is graded is submitting someone else's work, whatever the source, and that is academic misconduct at essentially every institution.
Does your course permit solution manuals at all? Some explicitly do; some explicitly do not; most say something in a handbook nobody reads. Find out — it takes one search of your own university's policy.
Are shared notes permitted? Peer-to-peer note marketplaces raise a second issue entirely: lecture material, slides and problem sets are frequently the copyright of the lecturer or institution, and uploading them can breach both copyright and enrolment terms regardless of whether anyone cheats.

On that second point, this project has documented what it can cost. Our Course Hero page records a US jury verdict of $75,375,114.85 against Learneo in March 2026, including 1,458 DMCA violations at the $25,000 statutory maximum, on evidence that copyright management information was stripped from uploaded material and replaced with the platform's branding. That case was about uploading, not about studying — and it is the clearest available demonstration that the copyright question in this category is real and separate from the cheating question.

So the practical position for a student: the rental is straightforwardly good; the solutions are a legitimate study aid used one way and misconduct used another, and the line is drawn by your institution rather than by the seller. Read your own policy once — it is the cheapest insurance available against an expensive mistake.
