Genie Says

Revolut obtained a full UK banking licence in March 2026, after conditional approval in July 2024 and a mobilisation period during which its UK banking entity could hold only £50,000 in deposits — roughly three years in total, held up over regulators' concerns about global risk controls. The substantive change is that eligible UK deposits moved from e-money safeguarding, where an administrator distributes funds if a firm fails, to FSCS protection up to £85,000. Protection is entity- and jurisdiction-specific, and investments and crypto are not deposits.

How to Use a Revolut Referral Code

Note what changed and when

Conditional approval July 2024, mobilisation with a £50,000 deposit cap, full UK banking licence March 2026.

Understand safeguarded versus guaranteed

E-money safeguarding means an administrator distributes funds. A banking licence brings FSCS cover to £85,000.

Check which entity holds your money

Protection is jurisdiction-specific, and Revolut operates through different entities in different markets.

Establish the referral conditions

Which action, within what window, paid how. Short deadlines are the usual reason bonuses appear not to arrive.

Reward Details

Referrer Reward
The same conditions apply to the referrer's payment. Deadlines are short.
Minimum Purchase
Commonly one or more card payments within a set period after account opening.
Validity
Full UK banking licence obtained March 2026, following conditional approval in July 2024 and a mobilisation period.

Eligibility
Deposit protection is entity- and jurisdiction-specific. Investments and crypto are not deposits and are not covered by a deposit guarantee.

Why Choose Revolut?

Roughly three years to full authorisation

Held up over regulators' concerns about global risk controls. Length is informative, not embarrassing.

Mobilisation caps deposits at £50,000

A standard restricted stage for new UK banks — the licence exists while systems are proven.

Safeguarded to guaranteed is a real upgrade

The most consequential change to this product in years, and it is barely reported.

Deposits only

Investments and crypto held in the app are not deposits and are not covered by a deposit guarantee.

About Revolut

Revolut spent roughly three years becoming a UK bank. It finished in March 2026, and almost nothing written about it reflects that yet — including most pages telling you about its referral bonus.

Revolut obtained a **full UK banking licence in March 2026**. The route there is worth understanding, because it explains what your money was and was not covered by along the way, and because the same process applies to every new bank.

In **July 2024** Revolut received *conditional* approval and entered what UK regulators call **mobilisation** — formally, Authorisation with Restrictions. This is a standard stage for new banks: the licence exists but the business is restricted while governance, controls and systems are built out and tested. During that period Revolut's UK banking entity was permitted to hold only **£50,000 in deposits** in total. Nothing changed for customers day to day, because the customer-facing business continued to operate as it had.

The whole process, from application to full authorisation, ran roughly three years — and reporting through 2025 indicated the licence was held up over regulators' concerns about global risk controls. That is unusually long, and the length is informative rather than embarrassing: obtaining permission to hold the public's deposits in the UK is deliberately demanding, and a fast approval for a business of Revolut's scale and complexity would have been the surprising outcome.

**What full authorisation changes.** A fully licensed UK bank's eligible deposits fall under the **Financial Services Compensation Scheme, protected up to £85,000 per eligible person per banking licence**. Before that, UK customer funds were handled under the **e-money** regime, which requires safeguarding — segregating customer money, typically at a bank — but provides no compensation scheme. If an e-money firm fails, an administrator distributes the safeguarded pot, costs are deducted, and any shortfall in how funds were held falls on customers. Moving from safeguarded to guaranteed is a genuine upgrade in the protection attached to a balance, and it is the most consequential thing to have happened to this product in years.

Two qualifications worth keeping. Protection is jurisdiction-specific: which entity holds your money, and in which country, determines which scheme applies. Revolut operates through different entities in different markets, so a UK licence does not automatically describe the position of a customer elsewhere. And the scheme covers deposits — money held in other product wrappers, such as investments or crypto, is not a deposit and is not covered by a deposit guarantee regardless of the licence.

**On the referral.** Revolut's bonuses have consistently been conditional rather than automatic: the referred person must typically open the account, complete verification, and then use it — usually a card payment within a fixed window, sometimes several. Deadlines are short and unmet conditions are the usual reason people believe a bonus was not honoured when in fact it was never triggered. Before counting anything, establish the exact qualifying action, the window, and whether the reward is cash into the account.

This category has been under sustained regulatory scrutiny — Starling fined nearly £29 million by the FCA in October 2024, N26 under a BaFin growth cap until June 2024 with a €9.2 million fine. Read Revolut's long licensing process in that context: it is what the supervision of digital banks now looks like.
