Surfshark is usually positioned as the cheaper, scrappier alternative to NordVPN. It merged with Nord Security on 2 February 2022, which does not make the product worse — but it does change what "alternative" means.

Surfshark's best-known differentiator is that it permits unlimited simultaneous device connections, where most competitors cap the number. That is a real and unusual feature, and for a household or a person with many devices it is the practical reason to choose it.

The context that most comparisons omit: Surfshark merged with Nord Security on 2 February 2022. Both companies continue to operate independently, with separate infrastructure and separate user bases, but they are one group.

This does not make Surfshark a worse product, and it is worth being careful about that. Nothing about a merger degrades an unlimited-device policy or a working client. What it changes is the framing under which most people encounter the service. Surfshark is habitually presented as the independent challenger undercutting NordVPN — that framing predates the merger and has largely outlived it. If your reason for choosing Surfshark is that you would rather not give money to the market leader, it is worth knowing where the money goes.

The market has two such groups. The other is Kape Technologies, formerly the adtech company Crossrider, which owns Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and ZenMate — and a set of VPN review websites, which is the more troubling half of that sentence. Between Kape and Nord Security sit most of the VPNs a consumer is ever shown, which makes independent comparison harder than it looks and makes an actually independent provider more interesting than it would otherwise be.

On the referral: as across this category, these are affiliate arrangements. Commission is paid on a sale rather than for a recommendation, typically at a substantial fraction of the first subscription payment and tiered by volume, with payment released once the refund window has passed. That structure is why VPN recommendations saturate search results and video platforms, and knowing it is more useful than any individual comparison.

If you are assessing Surfshark on the things that can actually be checked: the unlimited-device policy is genuinely differentiating; the questions that matter otherwise are jurisdiction and what it can compel, whether the no-logs claim has been independently audited and how recently, whether the clients are open-source, and what happens to traffic if the tunnel drops. Those questions apply identically to every provider in this batch, and they are the only ones that survive a change of ownership.
