TurboTax Referral Code

TurboTax's referral is one of the more straightforward on this site, and the thing that decides its value is not the amount but the calendar.

TurboTax pays a $25 gift card for each person who makes a qualifying purchase through your referral, and gives that person up to 20% off what they pay. Gift cards are capped at $500 during the program year, which works out at twenty successful referrals.

$25 is a genuinely good per-referral figure by the standards of everything documented on this site — most consumer referrals pay a fraction of that, and this one is a gift card rather than store credit locked inside the product.

The constraint is seasonal, and it is the thing to plan around. Tax software is bought in a narrow window each year, so your referral opportunity is concentrated into the weeks around filing season rather than spread across twelve months. Someone you tell about TurboTax in August will not act on it, and by the time they do, the link, the offer or the program year may have moved. If you intend to use this, the useful time to raise it is when people are actually thinking about filing.

The condition is a qualifying purchase. Your friend must actually pay for a TurboTax product — and a meaningful proportion of TurboTax users file on the free tier, which does not qualify. So the referral works for people with more complex returns who were going to pay anyway, and not for the simple-return filers who make up much of the user base.

A recurring complaint in TurboTax's own community forums is people who referred someone and never received the reward. The usual explanations are the friend filing on a free product, not using the referral link at the point of purchase, or the program year having rolled over. If yours has not arrived, those are the three things to check before assuming it failed.

Being a gift card rather than a discount on your own filing is a real advantage: it does not require you to buy TurboTax again to realise the value.
