The headline figure is the largest in this cluster of offers. It is attached to a condition that is named without being described, which is the whole problem.

Coupert offers an instant $2 sign-up bonus, and a $10 referral bonus for each friend "who joins and meets the criteria".

The criteria are not stated anywhere, and an undefined qualifier is worse than a demanding one that is plainly given — which is worth explaining, because it is counter-intuitive. A hard but stated condition, such as "your friend must spend $50", is workable: you can decide whether it is achievable, tell your friend what is required, and check afterwards whether it was met. An undefined condition supports none of that. It cannot be planned around, it cannot be explained to the person being referred, and if no reward arrives it is impossible to tell whether something went wrong or whether the criteria simply were not met. An unverifiable condition is, in practice, an unenforceable promise — not because anybody is acting in bad faith, but because there is nothing to hold up against the outcome.

The shape is also worth noting: $2 is described as instant, and the $10 is conditional. The certain money is the small money, and the large money carries the undefined qualifier — the figure people remember is $10, and the figure most people actually receive is $2.

The one question that matters takes a single message to ask: what exactly are the criteria? On extensions of this kind the likely candidates are a qualifying purchase within a period, a minimum cashback amount earned, or the friend remaining active for some number of days — but likely is not known, and it is worth asking before sharing rather than guessing.

What matters more than the referral, because this is a browser extension, is what it can see. To find and test discount codes at a checkout, an extension must be able to read and modify the pages you visit. That is the mechanism, not an accusation — but it is a significantly larger permission than an app, and it is granted at install in a screen most people click through. Check which sites it requests access to — "all sites" is a far larger grant than a named list of retailers. Ask what browsing data is collected, whether it is identifiable, and whether it is shared or sold. Ask whether it overwrites other affiliate tracking at checkout: extensions in this category have been criticised for replacing an existing referral cookie with their own, which quietly diverts commission from a creator whose link you clicked deliberately. And ask what happens to the data if the company is sold — extensions change hands and permissions travel with them.

There is also a hazard specific to platforms doing both coupons and cashback: applying a discount code can void the cashback entirely, because many retailers pay no commission on discounted orders. On a tool whose entire purpose is finding codes, that tension is built in — ask which codes are cashback-safe, and if in doubt take the larger of the two rather than both.
