EarnFM shares your internet connection with third parties and pays you for it. Its referral programme offers 10% of what the people you refer earn, described as forever, plus a $5 welcome bonus for the new user.

Take the 10% first, because the way to read it is not obvious.

A lifetime percentage sounds generous, and in categories with substantial per-user revenue it would be. Here it is affordable precisely because the base is tiny. Bandwidth-sharing apps pay in the region of a dollar or two a month for a typical home connection — Honeygain, the largest in the category, works out at roughly $0.10 per gigabyte relayed, with $1 to $3 a month commonly reported. Ten percent of that, forever, is somewhere around a dollar and a half over a full year, per referral, assuming the person keeps the app installed for a full year, which most do not.

This is a general principle worth carrying: a percentage is only as interesting as the number it multiplies. High referral percentages cluster in low-value categories for exactly this reason, and the same pattern appears on AppKarma's 30% of lifetime earnings elsewhere in this export. Where per-user value is genuinely high — a broker, a bank — percentages are smaller and conditions are heavier.

The $5 welcome bonus is more consequential than the 10%, and if you are going to use this category at all, that is the number to compare across platforms alongside the minimum payout.

Now the part that matters more than either. What EarnFM and every app in this category actually sells is your residential IP address. Businesses pay to route web requests through real household connections because websites treat residential traffic differently from data-centre traffic. That means unidentified third parties are using the internet from your home, on your ISP account, and their activity is attributed to your IP.

Two things follow. Most major consumer ISPs prohibit using a residential line for commercial bandwidth resale, so running these apps is likely to be a breach of your internet contract — enforcement is uncommon, but the outcomes when it happens are throttling, forced migration to a business tariff, or disconnection. And you are accepting responsibility, in practical terms and in some jurisdictions in legal ones, for traffic you cannot see or control, under terms of service that generally indemnify the platform rather than you. So the honest framing of the referral is this: you are inviting a friend to rent out their home IP address to strangers, probably against their ISP's terms, in exchange for a few dollars a month, and you receive 10% of their few dollars. Whether that is a reasonable thing to send someone is a question worth answering before sending it.
