Our record says what Gems can become. It does not say how many of them make a pound — and the second question is the one that matters.

Lyka pays both sides in Gems, described as convertible into cash, vouchers and exclusive products. Notice what that sentence does and does not do: it answers "what can I turn this into?" three times over, and never answers "how much is it worth?" Those are different questions. Listing several redemption routes creates an impression of flexibility and value without supplying either, because flexibility is worthless if the underlying amount is tiny — being able to convert two pence into cash, vouchers or products is still two pence, and a reader who sees three options tends to assume the balance is worth converting.

This is a distinct variant worth recording: the redemption list used as a substitute for a rate. Most unpriced currencies in this catalogue simply say nothing about redemption; this one says a great deal — about everything except the number.

Four standing questions apply, and the first is the only one that matters until it is answered. How many pounds is a Gem worth on redemption? Without this, a Gem balance is not a number and cannot be compared with any other offer on this site. Is there a minimum redemption, and does one referral clear it — the question that most often turns a small currency reward into nothing at all, since a balance below the threshold is unusable and referral awards are usually small balances. Do Gems expire on inactivity? And can the issuer change the rate — a currency the issuer prices is a promise priced by the person who owes it, and if the rate is not published, changing it costs them nothing and tells you nothing.

One further question is specific to currencies with several redemption routes, and it is where the value actually differs: do all three routes pay the same rate? They frequently do not. It is common for cash withdrawal to be the worst rate and vouchers or own-brand products the best, because paying in vouchers costs the issuer less than paying in money, and paying in its own products costs it least of all. So "convertible into cash" may be technically true at a rate that makes the cash option pointless. Ask for all three rates, not one — and if only one is offered, ask which route it applies to.

Whatever Gems turn out to be worth, a referral reward on a platform of this kind is almost certainly small. Treat it as worth nothing until the rate is published — not because anybody is being dishonest, but because an unvalued unit cannot be compared with any alternative, and a reward you cannot compare is a reward you cannot rationally act on.
