A discount that goes to somebody else had previously been the headline here. Here is what each side actually gets, and the two questions that decide whether a flower order works.

A correction first: the headline reward previously advertised here belongs to somebody else.

"Get 20% Off First Order" had been the title, the tagline and the leading statistic on this page. That 20% is what the person you refer receives. What you receive is a £10 voucher for your next order — and only once their order has been delivered. A cap of £100 in rewards per year applies, the programme is UK-only, and you must already have made a purchase before you can generate a referral link.

Two different rewards, on two different sides, in two different forms — a percentage for them, a fixed voucher for you. Presenting one of them as "the" reward is how a reader ends up expecting the wrong thing, and it is worth being explicit about which is which.

A small piece of arithmetic makes the two comparable: 20% off is worth more than £10 on any order above £50, and less on any order below it. So on a typical bouquet the referred person is usually getting the better end — which is unusual, and worth knowing before you decide the offer is not worth sharing.

And note the trigger: delivery, not purchase. Your voucher follows the referred person's order actually being delivered, which is a fair and honest condition — the company pays once the transaction has genuinely completed — but it does mean a delayed or failed delivery delays your reward too.

Note also what your reward is: a voucher for your next order. Flowers are an occasion-driven purchase that most people make a few times a year, at moments they do not choose. So florist credit is worth its face value only if an occasion is coming and the voucher is still valid when it arrives. Check the expiry the day you receive it.

Now the two things that actually decide whether a flower order works.

One: the substitution clause. Nearly every online florist reserves the right to substitute stems, colours or whole arrangements. This is not sharp practice. Flowers are seasonal, perishable and grown rather than manufactured, and no florist can promise a specific stem weeks ahead of a delivery date. But it means the photograph on the website is an illustration, not a specification, and the gap between the two is the single commonest complaint in this category.

It matters most when the colour is the message — an anniversary, a wedding scheme, a funeral in particular colours. In those cases, telephone a florist and get confirmation of what can actually be supplied rather than ordering from a picture. If you do order online, read the substitution wording first so you know what you have agreed to.

Two: the date is the product. Birthday flowers delivered the day after a birthday are worth very little, so "we will refund the delivery charge" is not an adequate remedy for a missed date and you should know the policy before you need it. Ask three things: is the delivery date guaranteed; what is the remedy if it is missed; and what is the cut-off time for same-day or next-day delivery?

And one comparison worth making across this whole category: letterbox delivery versus courier delivery is a genuine product difference, not just packaging. Letterbox bouquets are sent in bud so they survive the post and open over several days — so they do not look like the photograph on arrival, by design. Courier delivery gives you a bouquet that looks right on the day but requires someone to be in. Finally, a note on peak pricing that applies to every florist: prices across the category rise around Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. So a £10 voucher spent at peak is a smaller proportion of the price than the same £10 spent in an ordinary week — and if you have any choice about when to use it, the quiet weeks are where it goes furthest.
