The quoted price is for the accommodation. On a family driving holiday to France or Italy, everything else is a large second number.

The pricing model here is simple and it is the thing to get right: you are buying accommodation on a park, and getting there is your problem.

That is not a criticism — it is a legitimate and long-established way to sell a holiday, and it gives you control over how you travel. But it means the quoted price is not comparable to a package price, and comparing them directly is the commonest mistake in this category.

Four costs to add before any comparison, and on a family driving holiday they are substantial:

The crossing. Ferry or tunnel, both ways, priced by vehicle and passengers. This is booked separately, it is demand-priced like a flight, and it can be a large fraction of the accommodation cost on a shorter stay.
Fuel and tolls. Motorway tolls in France, Italy and Spain are significant on a long drive, and fuel for a loaded car over two long driving days each way is a real number. Both are easy to underestimate before you have done the route once.
Overnight stops. A drive from a Channel port to the south of France or to Italy is rarely done in one go with children. Budget for a night each way, which is two more hotel nights than the brochure implies.
On-park extras. Bed linen, towels, cots and highchairs, air conditioning, wifi, a barbecue, and dog charges are frequently extras rather than inclusions, and they accumulate.

So the honest instruction: build the total — accommodation plus crossing plus fuel plus tolls plus overnight stops plus extras — before comparing against a flight-inclusive package. Do that once and the comparison becomes real. Not doing it is how a driving holiday that looked considerably cheaper turns out not to be.

Where this format genuinely wins, and it does win for the right trip:

You have your own car at the destination, which for a family with young children and a lot of equipment is worth a great deal, and which removes hire car costs and the associated deposit and insurance arguments.
You can carry things — bikes, travel cots, food, a decent coffee pot. Self-catering plus your own car is the cheapest way to feed a family abroad, by a wide margin.
The marginal cost of extra people is low. A mobile home sleeping six costs the same whether four or six sleep in it, which inverts the usual holiday arithmetic where each additional person adds a flight and a bed.
Children are largely self-organising on a park, which is the actual reason this format has endured.

Three things to check on the specific park and pitch, because they matter more than the brochure suggests:

Where the pitch sits. Distance to the pool, the toilet block and the bar decides your week — near the bar is loud at midnight; far from the pool is a long walk eight times a day. Ask whether you can request or pay for a specific area.
What the pool arrangements actually are. Opening dates, whether the water park operates in shoulder season, and any lifeguard hours. Early and late season bookings frequently find headline facilities closed, and that is disclosed but rarely prominently.
The state of the specific unit type. Parks operate accommodation of different ages side by side. A newer unit is a materially different holiday from an older one, and recent reviews mentioning the specific grade are the way to tell.

On the referral: verify the amount, the instrument and the trigger, and — as across travel — establish whether it pays on booking or after the holiday, since these are booked many months ahead and cancellation charges escalate on a published schedule. Ask for that schedule by date before booking, because it is the document that matters if plans change.
