The commission rate is genuinely competitive. Whether you can rely on it depends on where you are: Gate.io was named in India's December 2023 FIU-IND compliance action and has faced URL blocks since January 2024, unlike some peers that have since restored access.

Gate.io's standard referral programme pays 20% to 40% of a referred trader's spot trading fees, with the exact rate depending on your account tier and your referrals' trading volume. Futures commission runs a separate range, 10% to 30%, on the same tier and volume basis. A further Affiliate Program, for higher-volume partners, pays up to 80% on both spot and futures fees — a materially different track from the standard referral link, aimed at partners rather than individual users.

Advertised sign-up bonuses commonly cite a headline of up to $6,666 in combined rewards. As with the comparable headlines elsewhere in this cluster, that figure is a sum of separate deposit, trading and task rewards each at its own maximum, not a single prize. Identify the deposit or first-trade bonus a genuinely new user would actually receive, and treat the rest as conditional on trading volume most new users will not reach.

Access is the more consequential question for an Indian reader. Gate.io was among nine exchanges — alongside Binance, KuCoin, Kraken, Huobi, Bitstamp, Bittrex, MEXC and Bitfinex — served compliance notices by India's Financial Intelligence Unit in December 2023, and it was blocked at the URL level in January 2024. Unlike KuCoin, Binance and Bybit, which have since pursued registration and restored access through that path, Gate.io has not followed the same route as of this writing. Availability in India should be verified directly before relying on any commission structure here — a competitive rate is irrelevant if the exchange cannot be reached.

Commission is paid in crypto, which under India's VDA regime makes each payment an acquisition of a virtual digital asset: cost basis at receipt, a flat 30% plus 4% cess on disposal when converted, no loss offset against other crypto, other income or future years, 1% TDS per transfer under Section 194S, and an entry in Schedule VDA. As a foreign platform, holdings also engage Schedule FA, which has no minimum value exemption — and that framework applies regardless of whether the exchange itself is currently reachable.
