Uber's referral is advertised as a free ride. It is a capped discount, and understanding where the cap sits tells you exactly which journeys it covers and which it does not.

Uber operates in more than 700 cities, offering cars, bikes and scooters. Its referral is advertised as a free ride.

It is a capped discount, and the cap is the whole offer. Ride credits in this category are set at a value near an average short urban fare. That means the ride is genuinely free only when your journey costs less than the cap. Above it, you pay the difference — and the phrase "free ride" stops describing what happens.

The part that matters most is the interaction with surge. During periods of high demand, the same journey costs substantially more. The cap does not move. So a credit that covers a whole trip at a quiet Tuesday lunchtime covers a fraction of the same trip on a Friday night, in bad weather, or after an event finishes. The offer is worth proportionally least at exactly the moments a ride is worth most to you — which is also when people are most tempted to use it.

That produces a genuinely useful piece of advice, and it is the opposite of the instinct: spend ride credit on an ordinary journey at a normal time, not on the expensive one you were dreading. On the expensive trip the credit covers a small share of a large fare. On the ordinary trip it can cover all of it. The credit is worth the same in absolute terms either way, but only one of those uses feels — and is — like a free ride.

What else sits outside the discount: booking and platform fees, airport surcharges, tolls, and any cleaning or waiting charges. As with the food delivery offers examined elsewhere in this export, the only honest comparison is the total payable with the code against the total payable without it, not the discount line shown at checkout.

Two further things worth knowing about fares generally. Quoted upfront prices and metered fares behave differently when a route changes or traffic worsens, and which applies varies by city and product. And fare estimates shown before booking are estimates — the figure that binds is the one at confirmation, so it is worth actually looking at it rather than tapping through.

On the driver side, because this site has repeatedly found the two conflated. Several pages in this project describe a platform's driver or courier programme while presenting it as a customer referral. They are entirely different propositions, and Uber's is the one with a landmark judgment attached: in Uber BV v Aslam [2021] UKSC 5, decided on 19 February 2021, seven justices unanimously held that Uber drivers are workers — and that they are working whenever logged into the app and available to accept a trip, not merely while carrying a passenger. The Court pointed to Uber fixing driver pay with no driver influence, setting passenger fares, and dictating the terms of the contract. Anyone arriving at this page to earn by driving rather than by riding should read that ruling before reading a recruitment page.

And a note on what the credit is: it is ride credit, not money. It cannot be withdrawn, it applies only to Uber, and it is worth nothing to someone who does not take a ride. Check its expiry, since ride credits commonly lapse faster than people expect.
