Google Fi gives $20 in credit to each side. Its actual differentiator is structural: unlike almost every other MVNO, it does not depend on a single host network.

Google Fi Wireless is a mobile virtual network operator that provides service across multiple host networks, switching between them rather than depending on one. Its referral gives $20 in Fi credit to each side.

Why multi-network matters, given how MVNOs normally work. An MVNO rents capacity on somebody else's network, so ordinarily its coverage is exactly its single host's coverage — which is why comparing budget carriers usually means comparing the same few underlying networks wearing different logos. Drawing on more than one host is a genuine structural difference, and it changes the coverage question from "does this one network cover me" to "does any of several".

Where that is worth real money: people who travel across large areas, who live at the edge of one network's footprint, or who regularly move between places served well by different carriers. If you have ever watched one person's phone work and another's fail in the same room, that is the problem this addresses. Where it is worth little: someone who spends nearly all their time in a well-covered urban area already served by every network. Multi-network resilience is insurance, and like all insurance it is worth most to those most exposed.

Two qualifications worth stating, because "uses multiple networks" is easy to over-read:

Handset support is not universal. The ability to switch between hosts depends on the device, and support varies — some phones get the full switching behaviour and others are effectively single-network. Check your specific handset before assuming you get the headline feature, because this is the most common way people buy the proposition and do not receive it.

Deprioritisation still exists. As explained on our Mint Mobile and giffgaff pages, a host network can serve its own direct customers before wholesale traffic when a cell is congested — full signal bars, unusable data. Multi-network access can help by allowing a move to a less congested host, but it does not exempt you from the mechanism.

What to check before switching, as with any mobile plan: your handset's band and switching support; whether eSIM is available so you can test alongside an existing line; and the international roaming and calling terms, which for a service positioned around travel is the part most worth reading closely rather than assuming.

On the $20 credit: it is symmetrical — both sides receive the same — which is a clean structure and gives the referrer no reason to push a larger plan. But it is credit, not cash: spendable only against Fi service, not withdrawable, and worth nothing to someone who does not go on to pay for the service. Check any expiry and whether it applies against the first bill or spreads across several.
