Kiwi.com gives your friend €10 off a first trip and you €20. Before either matters, there is one thing about how it builds itineraries that changes what you are buying.

Kiwi.com is a European flight search and booking site. Its referral gives €10 off a first trip to the person you refer and €20 to you.

A correction first. As exported, this record contained two unrelated companies: the title, statistics and description were Kiwi.com, while the search description was Yocket Finance copy — an entirely different business, advertising "up to ₹3,000 per referral". It is the fifteenth content defect found in this export and the second where a single record described two different companies. Recording it rather than silently overwriting it is the practice this project has followed throughout, because a page that names the wrong business misleads in a way a stale figure does not.

Now the thing that actually matters about this platform, and it is genuinely useful information that no referral listing explains.

Kiwi.com's distinguishing capability is combining flights from carriers that do not sell tickets together. Conventional booking shows you itineraries the airlines themselves offer. Kiwi.com will stitch a journey from, say, one budget carrier to another that has no commercial relationship with the first — creating routes and prices that do not otherwise exist. For some journeys, particularly between secondary cities, that is the difference between an affordable trip and an impossible one, and it is a real service.

The consequence is that you hold separate tickets, and separate tickets behave differently from a single itinerary. On a normal connecting booking, the airline is contractually responsible for getting you to your destination — if the first leg is late and you miss the second, they rebook you. On separate tickets there is no such obligation. The second carrier sold you a seat on a flight you did not board; that is, from its perspective, a no-show. A delay of forty minutes on a leg you booked cheaply can cost you the entire onward journey, and the ordinary passenger-rights framework that covers a delayed connection does not apply because there is no connection — there are two flights.

Kiwi.com's own guarantee is the answer to this, and it is the single most important thing to understand before booking. Platforms selling self-connect itineraries typically offer a protection product that undertakes to rebook or refund you when a self-transfer fails. Whether it is included or optional, what it covers, what it excludes, and how a claim actually works are the terms that decide whether the cheaper itinerary was genuinely cheaper. Read them before booking, not after a delay.

Four practical checks on any self-connect booking:

Leave far more connection time than feels necessary. Without a contractual connection, the buffer is your only protection, and it should account for immigration, baggage reclaim and re-checking.

Check whether you must clear immigration and re-check bags. Separate tickets almost always mean collecting luggage and checking in again, which can add hours and may require a transit visa you did not anticipate.

Confirm airport changes. Some itineraries connect between different airports in the same city, which is a ground journey with its own delay risk.

Check baggage separately for each leg, since allowances and fees differ by carrier and are not harmonised across a stitched itinerary.

On the €20/€10: it is symmetrical in structure and cash-denominated in effect, which is a clean arrangement. It is also small against a flight, and the cost of one missed self-transfer exceeds it many times over — which is why the protection terms, not the referral, should decide whether you book.
