MEGA's free storage is famously generous and almost none of it is permanent. Understanding which parts expire, and when, matters more than the headline number — because the wrong assumption can leave you locked out of your own files.

A free MEGA account comes with 20 GB of storage. Everything above that is an Achievement bonus, and the critical fact — which almost no page about MEGA mentions — is that Achievement bonuses are temporary.

Referring a friend earns 5 GB, provided they both register and install a MEGA app. That 5 GB lasts 365 days and then disappears. The other bonuses run on their own clocks: installing the desktop or mobile app yourself adds 5 GB each for 180 days, starting a MEGA VPN or MEGA Pass trial adds 5 GB for 365 days, and the large signup bonus that makes MEGA look so generous at registration lasts only 30 days.

The consequence deserves stating plainly, because it is a real risk rather than a technicality. If you store files in bonus space and the bonus expires, your account goes over quota. An over-quota MEGA account restricts what you can do — you are not simply nudged to upgrade, your access to your own data is curtailed until you free up space or pay. Anyone treating referral storage as permanent capacity is building on a floor that is scheduled to disappear.

So the sensible way to use this programme is as headroom, not as capacity. Keep your durable data inside the 20 GB you actually own, and treat bonus space as somewhere to park things you can afford to move.

On the referral itself: the friend must install an app, not merely create an account. A registration that never turns into an install credits nothing, which is the same failure mode as Dropbox.

Compared with Dropbox — the obvious alternative — MEGA gives ten times as much per referral and takes it all back after a year, while Dropbox gives 500 MB and lets you keep it. Which is better depends entirely on whether you need space now or space permanently.
