Robinhood publishes the probability distribution behind its free stock, and it is the single most useful thing on this topic. Almost no page quoting "$1,500" mentions it.

Robinhood gives you a randomly allocated share of stock when someone you refer opens and funds an account. The headline everyone quotes is $1,500. The number you should plan around is about $5.

Robinhood publishes the odds, which makes this one of the few rewards on this site where the real expected value can be calculated rather than guessed. Roughly 98% of free-stock bonuses are worth between $2.50 and $10. Around 1% fall between $10 and $50, and around 1% between $50 and $200. Broken down more precisely, about 99% of participants receive approximately $5, around 0.9% receive $10, and roughly 0.1% receive $200.

So the distribution is not merely skewed, it is nearly flat at the bottom. This is a lottery where the overwhelmingly likely outcome is $5 and the tail is thin.

The $1,500 figure is a cap on how much free stock you can earn in a calendar year, not a prize. Reaching it at approximately $5 a referral would require somewhere in the region of 300 successful referrals. Presenting it as what you might get is the central distortion on this SERP.

None of that makes the programme bad. $5 of a real equity, in a real brokerage account, for introducing a friend who was going to open one anyway is a perfectly reasonable reward, and it is a genuine asset rather than points or store credit — it can appreciate, and it can be sold. It is simply not $1,500, and someone deciding how much effort to spend chasing referrals deserves the actual number.

Two conditions worth knowing. The referred person must open an account and meet Robinhood's funding requirement — a signup alone does not release anything. And the stock is allocated randomly from Robinhood's available pool, so neither side chooses it.

The wider point for anyone recommending a brokerage: the account matters far more than the bonus. Fees, product range and whether the person should be investing at all are the things worth discussing with a friend. A $5 share is not a reason to open a trading account.
