The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 banned online money games from 22 August 2025, and rummy platforms stopped alongside fantasy sports and poker. RummyCircle, RummyCulture and the other major rummy products were named among those affected.

Rummy's position is worth setting out, because it had the strongest legal footing of anything in this category. Indian courts had held for decades that rummy is a game of skill rather than gambling, and that finding survived repeated challenges — it was the basis on which an entire cash-rummy industry was built and taxed. The 2025 Act removed that protection not by disputing the skill question but by declining to ask it: the prohibition applies to online money games irrespective of whether they involve skill or chance. Years of favourable precedent became irrelevant to the operative test.

The referral consequence follows directly. GameCash was in-app currency for entering cash games, released against entry fees rather than paid out. With cash games prohibited there is no entry fee for it to apply to, and no rake from which to fund a referral bonus.

Free-to-play rummy is unaffected by the ban and continues to exist. What ended is any version where money is staked or won.
