Menswear has a structural feature that seasonal fashion largely lacks, and almost nobody shops accordingly.

Basics are usually continuity lines. Plain t-shirts, oxford shirts, chinos, crew-neck knits and dark denim are frequently carried year-round and reordered season after season, rather than replaced with a new range every few months. The same product code can exist for years.

That changes the sensible strategy in a specific way: when something fits properly, buy two.

In seasonal fashion this advice would be wrong — the item will not exist in three months and buying duplicates of something you have not lived with is a poor bet. In menswear basics it is close to free money, because:

You already know it fits, which as our fashion pages establish is the dominant cost in clothing. A garment you have worn and know is right removes the entire risk.
It removes future search cost. The most expensive part of replacing a worn-out shirt is finding one as good.
Basics wear out predictably, so a second one is not speculation — it is a purchase you were going to make later at an unknown price.

And note the corollary: it makes waiting for a sale genuinely sensible on things you already own and like. With a continuity line the item will still be there. The only reason to buy a basic at full price is that you need it now.

Now the part that applies whatever you buy: fit is still the dominant cost.

In size-dependent categories, returning is a normal outcome rather than a failure, so establish the terms before ordering:

Free or paid returns, and whether in-store return is available — which for a retailer with physical shops is free, immediate and removes the postage question entirely.
The window length, from delivery.
Exchange or refund, remembering that on a sizing problem an exchange is worth more.
Whether settlement is to your card or to store credit. Credit recycles your money rather than returning it.

And European sizing is a genuine trap for anyone buying across borders. Continental sizing conventions differ from UK and US ones, and menswear has more numeric measurements than womenswear — collar, chest, waist, inside leg — which is an advantage if you use them.

Measure once, properly, and write the numbers down. Chest, waist, inside leg, collar and sleeve. That set of five numbers works in any market and any brand, and it is the reason menswear is genuinely easier to buy online than womenswear once you have done it. Then buy on measurements rather than on S/M/L, which means very different things in different countries.

Two further checks:

Read the fabric composition. On basics it is the difference between something that survives fifty washes and something that pills after five — and on a garment you intend to wear constantly, that is the whole value.
Check the cut, not just the size. Slim, regular and relaxed in the same nominal size are different garments, and a brand's "slim" is not another brand's.

On the referral and any discount code, the same two questions as anywhere in fashion: does it stack with sale items, and what is excluded? A code that applies only at full price competes against a reduction that is probably coming — and on a continuity line, unlike a seasonal one, waiting genuinely works because the item will still be there.
