Beauty is the category where a low price most often has a supply-chain explanation — and the explanation is usually legitimate.

**When branded beauty is consistently cheaper than the brand's own price, there is a supply-chain reason — and it is usually a legitimate one worth understanding rather than a red flag.**

**The common explanations, none of which involve anything improper:**

**Parallel importing.** Genuine stock bought in a market where it is priced lower, then sold in one where it is priced higher. **The product is the manufacturer's own; only the route differs.** This is lawful in many places and is a large part of why beauty discounters exist.
**Volume buying and thin margins**, which is simply a different business model from a department store counter.
**Older stock or discontinued lines**, bought when a brand refreshes its range.
**Tester units and unboxed stock**, which should be — and generally is — described as such.

**⚠️ The consequences for a buyer are real but modest, and worth knowing rather than fearing:**

**The manufacturer's guarantee may be tied to the market of sale**, which our cross-border pages set out in general terms. **For cosmetics this rarely matters; for a device such as a hair tool it can matter a great deal.**
**Packaging and labelling may be for another market** — a different language, or a different regulatory format. **The product is the same; the box may not be what you expect.**
**Stock may be older**, which matters more in beauty than in most categories because **products have a shelf life.**

**So here is the single most useful check, and almost nobody knows it: read the batch code.**

**⚠️ Almost every cosmetic and fragrance carries a batch code printed or stamped on the packaging and the base of the item.** Free online batch-code checkers decode it into a manufacture date for most major brands. **That tells you how old the stock is — the one thing a listing will never say.**

**It also matters practically, because of the second thing to look for: the period-after-opening symbol.** ⚠️ **That is the small open-jar icon with a number and an "M" — 6M, 12M, 24M — meaning the months the product remains good AFTER first opening.** A product manufactured three years ago and never opened may be entirely fine; one opened eighteen months ago with a 12M symbol is not. **Between the batch code and the PAO symbol you can date any purchase properly.**

**What else to check on arrival:**

**Cellophane, seals and the general condition of the box.** ⚠️ **A genuine product in damaged packaging is common in discount channels and is usually just handling** — but it should be described, and it matters if the item is a gift.
**Fill level and weight against the stated volume.**
**That the item matches the listing exactly** — shade, concentration and size. ⚠️ **In fragrance especially, eau de toilette and eau de parfum are different products at different prices**, and confusing them is the commonest disappointment.

**And the comparison that actually saves money in this category: compare per millilitre.**

**Fragrance and cosmetics are sold in sizes chosen to make comparison difficult.** A 100ml bottle is frequently far better value per millilitre than a 30ml, and a gift set is sometimes better still and sometimes considerably worse. **Divide the price by the volume every time** — our beauty research found this to be the single most reliable saving in the whole category, ahead of any discount code.

**Two further standing points from that research:**

**Timing beats a code.** Sitewide beauty events are frequent and deep, so **a modest referral discount frequently loses to simply waiting a few weeks.**
**The brand's own site is competitive more often than assumed**, particularly on gifts with purchase, which discounters do not usually match. **Check both.**

**⚠️ Finally, on returns: cosmetics carry hygiene exclusions almost universally.** Establish before ordering **what is returnable once a seal is broken** — in practice, frequently nothing — which is why **buying a sample or a small size of an unfamiliar fragrance is worth considerably more than the price difference suggests.**
