Why Choose Discover Card?
Phone, mail-in and other digital applications are excluded by Discover's terms. The friend has to apply online through the link you sent.
The referred cardmember must make a purchase that posts within three months of opening the account.
Nor can anyone who has opted out of Discover marketing communications.
Discover states the referral amount and the annual maximum in your own offer, so no single public figure applies to everyone.
About Discover Card
Discover pays both sides a statement credit when a referred friend is approved. The catch is narrow and worth knowing: applications by phone, by mail, or through any other digital route are not eligible.
Discover's Refer-A-Friend program pays a statement credit for each person who becomes a Discover cardmember through your referral. Both sides are credited.
The rule that disqualifies most failed referrals is about how the friend applies. Discover pays only where the person applies online through the specific digital link you sent them. Its terms exclude phone applications, mail-in applications, and other digital applications outright. It is not enough that they mention your name or apply the same day.
On the friend's side, the credit follows a purchase: they must make a purchase that posts to their account within three months of opening it. On yours, the account must be open and in good standing, and existing Discover cardmembers — along with anyone who has opted out of Discover marketing — cannot be referred at all.
Payment is not immediate. Discover asks for one to three billing periods for the statement credit to post after each referral is approved. It also notes that statement credits may be taxable.
Discover does not publish a single referral amount or a single annual cap. Both are shown in your own referral offer when you log in, so any fixed figure quoted elsewhere is somebody's offer rather than the program's terms.
