How to Use a Paytm UPI Referral Code

Check your own UPI address first

If your Virtual Payment Address is not in an accepted Paytm format, your reward is paid as cashback points rather than cash. This is worth checking before you refer anyone.

Friend clicks your link, then signs up

They must click the referral link before transacting. They qualify if they have no bank account linked to Paytm UPI — including long-standing wallet users who never linked one.

They pay within 7 days

One eligible UPI transaction inside the seven-day window. Miss it and the referral does not qualify.

Link your bank within 7 days

Cashback credits to your primary linked bank account. Fail to link within seven days of becoming eligible and the reward may expire.

About Paytm UPI

Paytm's Refer & Earn is one of the few Indian referral programs that pays real money into a bank account rather than wallet credit. Whether it does that for you depends on a detail of your own UPI setup that nobody mentions.

Paytm's referral pays actual money — cashback credited to the primary bank account linked to your Paytm UPI, not wallet balance and not points. That already separates it from most of this category. But there is a condition attached that decides whether you get money at all, and it is on none of the pages ranking for this query.

If your UPI Virtual Payment Address is not in one of Paytm's accepted formats, Paytm pays the reward in cashback points instead of cash. Your UPI handle — the part after the @ — determines the currency of your reward. Someone referring friends on a non-qualifying VPA can do everything right and end up with points they can only spend inside Paytm. Check your UPI address before you start referring, not after.

The second condition is a clock, and it is short. Your friend must complete their first eligible UPI transaction within seven days. Miss it and the referral does not qualify.

The third is the one people misread. Eligibility is about bank linkage, not about being new to Paytm. Your friend qualifies if they are new to Paytm, or if they have been inactive for roughly two months, and the operative condition is that they do not already have a bank account linked to Paytm UPI. That means a long-standing Paytm wallet user who never linked a bank account can still be referred — which is the opposite of what everyone assumes, and it widens the pool of people worth inviting considerably. They do need to click your referral link before transacting; opening the app first and paying someone breaks the attribution.

Then a trap on your own side. You must link your bank account to Paytm UPI within seven days of becoming eligible for the cashback, or it may expire. You can complete a perfectly valid referral and lose the reward by not finishing your own setup.

Caps are 20 referees a month and 100 a year. The published shape at time of writing is ₹100 per successful referral with an additional ₹33 for completing three in a calendar month, and Paytm has run campaigns at ₹150 and ₹333 alongside it. Treat any single figure as a snapshot and check the Refer & Earn screen in your app.
