Tide Referral Code

Tide pays £100 each — and Tide is not a bank, though which protection you have depends on which account you were issued

Tide is a UK business financial platform for small companies and sole traders, offering accounts, cards, invoicing and admin tools. Tide is not a bank: it is authorised by the FCA under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011, and partners with ClearBank for bank accounts.

Genie Says

Tide pays £100 to each side once the referred business completes £500 of transactions on its Tide card within three months of opening, with disputes and recharges excluded, paid within eight weeks of that spend. It is £500 on the card, not through the account, so transfers and direct debits do not count, and the full wait can approach five months. Tide is not a bank, despite sometimes being described as one: it is FCA-authorised under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011. Members hold either a business bank account provided by ClearBank, where eligible deposits are FSCS-protected to £120,000 per eligible depositor per firm since 1 December 2025, or a Tide e-money account issued via PrePay Technologies, where money is safeguarded but not FSCS-covered. Which you hold is a fact about your account, and for a business carrying payroll or a VAT reserve it matters.

How to Use a Tide Referral Code

Quote the current figure: £100

Tide's own referral pages state £100 to each side — read the company's terms directly rather than relying on any listing.

Tell your friend the spend must go through the card

£500 of card transactions within three months. Transfers, direct debits and incoming payments do not count, and a business could turn over far more than £500 without qualifying.

Expect a wait of up to five months

Three months to spend, then up to eight weeks to be paid. Note the date, because a reward you have forgotten is a reward you cannot check was paid.

Find out which account you hold

A ClearBank-provided bank account is FSCS-eligible; a Tide e-money account is safeguarded instead. For a business carrying payroll or a VAT reserve, that is not a detail.

Eligibility
Tide is not a bank; it is FCA-authorised under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011. Members hold either a business bank account provided by ClearBank Ltd (FSCS-eligible, £120,000 per eligible depositor per firm since 1 December 2025) or a Tide e-money account issued via PrePay Technologies (safeguarded, not FSCS). Check which you have.

Why Choose Tide?

£100 each, paid in cash

A symmetrical reward once the card-spend condition is met, paid in cash rather than credit.

£500 on the card, not through the account

Transfers, direct debits and customer payments do not count. A business that pays suppliers by transfer could fail this while turning over many times £500.

Tide says plainly that it is not a bank

It is FCA-authorised under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011 — "business bank account" is the marketing, not the licence.

One brand, two different protections

A ClearBank-provided account is FSCS-eligible to £120,000 since 1 December 2025; a Tide e-money account is safeguarded instead. Which applies is a fact about your account.

About Tide

Tide pays £100 to each side once the referred business meets a card-spend condition — and Tide is not a bank: some members hold a bank account via ClearBank, others an e-money account, with different protection for each.

Tide's own referral pages state £100 to each side: the friend you refer must complete £500 of transactions on their Tide card within three months of opening their account, with disputes and recharges excluded, and the £100 is then paid to both of you within eight weeks of that £500 being completed.

Two things in that are worth slowing down for. First, it is £500 on the card, not £500 through the account — money arriving from customers, money leaving by bank transfer, direct debits and standing orders do not appear to count, only card transactions do. For a business that pays suppliers by transfer and rarely uses the card, that is a condition it could quietly fail while turning over far more than £500. It is the same trap as any "qualifying transaction" clause: find the sentence that defines the word before relying on it. Second, the full wait is longer than either number suggests — three months to spend, then up to eight weeks to be paid, so nearly five months between the introduction and the money in the slowest case. That is worth having in mind, since a reward you have forgotten about is a reward you cannot check was paid.

For a genuine business account this is one of the more reasonable spend requirements on this site: a working business with a card will normally pass £500 in three months without doing anything it would not have done anyway. The usual caution still applies to anyone who would have to stretch to reach it — spending to qualify costs more than the reward returns.

Tide is not a bank, despite sometimes being described as one. Tide is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011 to issue electronic money and provide payment services. "Business bank account" is how the product is marketed; it is not the licence.

The more interesting part is what sits underneath, and it is a case this site has not previously described: one brand, one app, and two genuinely different protections depending on which account you were issued. A business bank account provided by ClearBank Ltd, a UK-licensed bank, falls under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme — the FSCS limit rose to £120,000 per eligible depositor per authorised firm on 1 December 2025, up from £85,000, with temporary high balances covered to £1.4m for six months. Or a Tide e-money account, issued through PrePay Technologies Limited, where the money is safeguarded — an amount equivalent to the balance is held in a safeguarding account, giving protection against the issuer's insolvency. That is real protection, but it is not FSCS: no compensation scheme tops up a shortfall, and a return is administered rather than automatic.

The question "is my money at Tide protected?" therefore has two correct answers, and which one applies to you is a fact about your account, not about the brand. It is stated in the app and in your account documentation, and for a business carrying a payroll float or a VAT reserve it is not a small detail.

Two further points for a business specifically. FSCS protection is per authorised firm, and the firm here is ClearBank, not Tide — if your business also holds money in another product that ultimately sits with the same licensed bank, those balances share one limit. And the amount is the point for a company: consumer balances rarely approach the limit, but a business account holding VAT, corporation tax and a month of payroll frequently does, which is precisely the situation in which knowing whether you are FSCS-covered or safeguarded stops being academic.

The fair summary: £100 each is a good referral by the standards of this site, the condition is achievable by any trading business, and the reward is cash rather than credit. Quote £100, tell your friend the £500 must go through the card, and tell them which protection their account carries — which is worth more to a business owner than the £100 itself.
