Dropbox ran the referral programme that every other referral programme is modelled on. It still works, it still pays in storage rather than money, and the ceiling is lower than most people realise.

Dropbox gives you and the person you refer 500 MB of extra storage each. It is the programme that made referral marketing famous, and the mechanics have barely changed.

The number worth knowing is the ceiling rather than the increment. Referral bonuses are capped at 16 GB on a free Basic account and 32 GB on Plus. At 500 MB a time that is 32 successful referrals before a Basic account stops gaining anything at all — a real limit, but a long way off for most people.

The condition that actually costs people referrals is what counts as successful. Your friend has to install Dropbox and sign in, not simply create an account through your link. Someone who registers on the web, looks around and never installs the desktop or mobile app has not completed the referral, and neither of you is credited. If you are referring someone deliberately, walk them as far as the install.

Unlike most of the rewards on this site, Dropbox's bonus space is permanent rather than time-limited. It does not expire after a year the way MEGA's does, which makes it more valuable than the raw figures suggest when you compare the two.

Worth separating from this: Dropbox also runs a DocSend referral programme, which is a different product with different terms. If you arrived looking to earn from recommending Dropbox commercially rather than to gain storage, that is a separate route.

The honest summary is that this is a storage programme, not an earnings one. There is no cash, no credit against a subscription, and no way to convert the space into anything else. It is worth doing if you use a free Dropbox account and want more room; it is not worth doing as a way to make money.
