That is not a criticism and it is not concealed. It is how the entire category works, and knowing it lets you read a deals site properly rather than naively.

What commission funding does to what you see. Merchants do not pay the same rates, and a portal has finite space at the top of a page. Where two comparable offers exist, the one that pays the site more has a structural advantage in placement — not necessarily through any deliberate decision, but because a business optimises what it measures, and what it measures is revenue per visitor. The consequence is not that the deals are fake. It is that prominence is not the same as best, and the ordering carries information about commission alongside information about value.

The check that costs thirty seconds: having found a deal on an aggregator, verify the price directly at the merchant, and check whether a category with no affiliate programme has a better offer that simply cannot appear on the portal at all. The systematic blind spot of commission-funded comparison is not bad deals — it is absent ones, from merchants who do not run affiliate programmes and therefore never enter the dataset.

How the money actually reaches the portal, and why it matters to you: attribution is decided by the last-click cookie. The merchant pays whoever owns the last tracking cookie in your browser at checkout. That is why deal portals ask you to click through rather than copy a code, and it is why a purchase can silently fail to credit anyone if another extension or coupon tool touches the session afterwards. If you are also using a cashback site, the two are competing for the same cookie — use one route per purchase, or neither may work as expected.

This is the same mechanism at the centre of the Honey litigation covered elsewhere in this batch, where a coupon extension was alleged to overwrite creators' tracking cookies with its own and take the commission. The cookie under discussion there is the cookie this portal depends on.

The genuine value of a deals aggregator, stated fairly: search and timing. Knowing that a category is discounted this week, or that a price is unusually low against its own history, is real information that most shoppers do not otherwise have. Aggregators are good at surfacing that. They are weaker as an authority on which specific offer is best, for the structural reason above.
