Cashback platforms look interchangeable because structurally they nearly are. Knowing what genuinely differs makes choosing one straightforward.

Here is the structural fact that makes this entire category comparable, and it is not on anyone's marketing.

Every cashback platform is buying the same product from the same wholesalers. A merchant decides what commission it will pay for a referred sale and distributes that through affiliate networks — Awin, CJ, Rakuten, Impact, Admitad and others. Every cashback site plugs into those same networks and receives the same merchant-set rates.

So a platform's advertised "cashback rate" is simply how much of an identical commission it has chosen to hand back to you.

Which makes the rate the least informative thing about a cashback site. Any platform can raise it tomorrow as a promotion and lower it the day after; none of them controls the underlying commission; and a headline rate tells you nothing about whether you will ever be paid. Choosing a cashback platform on advertised rates is like choosing a bank on the poster in the window.

Compare these four instead. None is advertised, and all four decide whether the platform is any use to you.

1. The payout threshold — and how long it takes YOU to reach it.
A minimum is only meaningful against your own shopping. At a 2% rate, a €20 threshold means €1,000 of tracked purchases through that platform. If you shop online occasionally, that is a year — and, as our Drop page documents in detail, a balance held with a company for a year is an unsecured claim on that company, not money. Divide the threshold by your realistic annual spend before anything else.

2. Payout methods available in YOUR country.
This is the commonest reason an international platform turns out to be useless to a particular reader, and it is invisible until you try to withdraw. A platform serving thirty markets may offer bank transfer in six of them and gift cards everywhere else. Check what you can actually receive, in your currency, before accumulating anything.

3. Retailer coverage in YOUR country.
A large global network is worth nothing if it does not include the shops you use. Look up four or five retailers you actually buy from rather than admiring a total store count — and note that the same brand frequently has different rates, and sometimes no coverage at all, in different markets.

4. The missing-claim process.
This is the one that matters most and the one nobody examines. Tracking failures are routine in cashback — our other pages set out why, since anything setting a cookie after your click can divert the attribution. The question is therefore not whether a purchase will occasionally fail to track, but what happens when it does. Is there a claim form? A deadline for raising it? Do they ask for the order confirmation? How long does investigation take, and is there any published resolution rate? A platform's handling of missing claims is the only moment its quality becomes visible, and it is worth researching before you need it rather than after.

On the mechanics, which are identical everywhere and worth stating once:

Cashback is affiliate commission shared back with you — not a discount. Everything follows from that. The pending period is the retailer's return window, because the merchant will not confirm commission until the sale is final; that is why it takes weeks and is not the platform being slow. Exclusions map to where commission exists, which is why exclusion lists look arbitrary but are not. Tracking fails when something sets a cookie after you click.

So: one route per purchase. Click through and complete in one uninterrupted session, no coupon site in another tab, no price-comparison link, no ad blocker or VPN, no clearing cookies, and finish on the device you started on.

And the standing comparison this project keeps returning to: prefer a certain discount to uncertain cashback when the two are close. A code that reduces the price at checkout is money definitely saved. Cashback is a claim that must survive tracking, a merchant's confirmation and a return window before it becomes yours.
