Samsung offers up to 8% off devices. It is a genuine discount on a large purchase — and it is the smaller of the two numbers that decide what a phone costs you.

Samsung manufactures phones, tablets, wearables, televisions and appliances. Its referral offers up to 8% off devices.

Eight percent on a device purchase is real money, and unlike many offers in this export it is applied to something expensive rather than to a coffee. It deserves to be taken seriously. It is also, on a phone, the smaller of the two numbers that determine what the device costs you.

The larger number is the residual. As our Cashify page sets out, total cost of ownership is what you pay minus what you recover. On a two-year cycle, a phone bought at 8% off and then discarded costs 92% of its price; the same phone bought at full price and resold for around a third costs 67%. The resale value is several times the discount. So the discount is worth having and it should not be the thing you optimise.

Which produces a specific, checkable question for this purchase: does the referral discount stack with a trade-in? Manufacturer promotions frequently include trade-in bonuses, exchange offers or bank-card discounts, and these commonly cannot be combined. Where you must choose, compare the total outlay after each route rather than assuming the larger headline wins — a trade-in bonus applied to a device you were replacing anyway is often worth more than a percentage, because it monetises the residual you would otherwise leave unrealised.

Two further things specific to buying devices at a discount:

Check what the discount applies to. Manufacturer offers routinely exclude the newest flagship, apply only to selected models, or attach to configurations that are not the one you want. "Up to 8%" is a ceiling and the ceiling usually sits on the models with the most stock rather than the most demand.

Compare against the same device elsewhere at the moment you buy. In consumer electronics, retailer pricing, bank offers and seasonal events move independently of manufacturer promotions, and the direct channel is not automatically cheapest. It is frequently better on warranty handling and on getting a genuinely new unit, which is worth something — but that is a different argument from price.

And the thing worth more than any of it over two years: buy a case and a screen protector immediately. Screen damage is the largest single deduction in every used-device quote, and the protection costs a small fraction of the value it preserves. On the arithmetic above, protecting the residual is a better return than negotiating the discount — and it is entirely within your control.
