SoFi logo $75 a referral; the big bonus wants your salary

SoFi Referral Code

SoFi is not "Fi" — a separate Indian company — and unlike most of this category SoFi really is a bank

SoFi is a US personal finance company offering checking and savings, investing, credit cards and loans. Since 2022 it has operated its own nationally chartered bank, SoFi Bank, N.A.

SoFi is sometimes confused with "Fi" — a different, Indian company with its own separate listing. There was no rebrand: the company is SoFi Technologies, Inc. Unlike most of the category SoFi really is a bank: OCC and Federal Reserve approval in January 2022, the Golden Pacific merger closing that February, operating the nationally chartered, FDIC-insured SoFi Bank, N.A. The referral is $75 a head capped at $500 a calendar year, about six friends. And "up to $325" for the new customer is two very different things: $25 for depositing $10, and up to $300 for setting up direct deposit — which means rerouting your salary, the stickiest relationship in consumer banking.

How to Use a SoFi Referral Code

Split the "up to $325" in two

$25 for depositing $10 is easy. The remaining $300 — over ninety per cent of the headline — requires setting up direct deposit.

Understand what direct deposit means

Rerouting your salary, not transferring money from another account of your own. Payroll is the stickiest relationship in consumer banking, and it is priced accordingly.

Check the window, the tiers and the clawback

These offers run on a deadline from account opening, are frequently banded by how much salary arrives, and can be reclaimed if the deposits stop.

Ask whether your reward is cash or points

A large company often runs several referral programmes at once with different payout forms. Read the specific terms rather than any quoted figure, including ours.

Why Choose SoFi?

Not "Fi" — SoFi never rebranded

Fi Money is a different, Indian company with its own separate listing here.

SoFi really is a bank

OCC and Federal Reserve approval in January 2022, merger closed February 2022, operating SoFi Bank, N.A. — nationally chartered and FDIC-insured. Most of this category is not.

Ninety per cent of "$325" wants your salary

$25 for depositing $10; up to $300 for setting up direct deposit. Two entirely different asks, not two halves of one offer.

One app, three regimes

Since November 2025 SoFi Bank has offered consumer crypto alongside banking and brokerage. Insured deposits, securities and crypto are not interchangeable, however adjacent the tabs.

About SoFi

SoFi is sometimes confused with "Fi", a different Indian company with its own separate listing. SoFi is SoFi Technologies, Inc., and it operates its own nationally chartered US bank.

SoFi Technologies, Inc. is the company behind this app — it has never operated under the name "Fi". Fi Money is a different company entirely, an Indian money-management app with its own separate listing.

What separates SoFi from almost everything else in its category: most "banking" apps are not banks. SoFi is one. SoFi received approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve in January 2022 to become a bank holding company, through the acquisition of Golden Pacific Bancorp; the merger closed in February 2022, and it has operated SoFi Bank, N.A. — a nationally chartered, FDIC-insured bank — ever since.

That is a genuinely different structure from the app-plus-partner-bank arrangement most of this category uses, and it is worth knowing which you are dealing with, because with a partner-bank model the deposit protection attaches to the partner, the limit is per depositor per bank rather than per app, and it does not multiply just because you hold two apps. Here there is no intermediary to reason about: the bank is the company.

One consequence worth stating plainly: in November 2025 SoFi Bank became the first nationally chartered US bank to offer consumer crypto trading, alongside its existing brokerage. So a single app can now hold insured bank deposits, brokerage assets and cryptocurrency — three different regimes with three different protections, and one balance in the user's mind. Insured deposits, securities held by a broker and crypto are not interchangeable, however adjacent the tabs are. Know which pot each sum is in.

Now the offer, which needs the same unpacking as every bank bonus. SoFi pays $75 for each successful referral, capped at $500 per calendar year — about six referrals — and up to $325 for the new customer, made up of $25 for opening an account and depositing $10, plus up to $300 for setting up direct deposit.

"Up to $325" is not one payment, and the two halves are not remotely alike. The $25 is trivially achievable — deposit ten dollars. The $300, which is over ninety per cent of the headline, requires setting up direct deposit — and "direct deposit" means rerouting your salary, not making a transfer from another account of your own. Payroll is the stickiest relationship a bank can have with you: the salary lands, the direct debits follow, then the savings, then the simple inertia of "my account". A few hundred dollars is a rational price to pay for that, and you should price it the same way.

Four things to establish before counting on the large half: what counts as a qualifying direct deposit, since there is normally a minimum and transfers from your own other accounts are commonly excluded — exactly what most people try first; the window, since these offers run on a deadline measured from account opening and missing it by a day forfeits the whole amount; whether it is tiered, since bonuses of this shape are frequently banded by how much salary arrives, so the advertised maximum belongs to the top band only; and whether it is clawed back if the deposits stop soon afterwards.

Two further notes on the referral itself. The $500 annual cap is the real ceiling, and unusually it is stated rather than hidden. At $75 a head it stops at about six friends a year, so this is a scheme for telling people you actually know, not a side income. And it is worth asking whether your reward arrives as cash or as points: a large company frequently runs several referral programmes at once — a banking one and an investing one, for instance — with different amounts and different payout forms, and the version you see depends on which product you hold. Points redeemable inside the company's own ecosystem are a different instrument from cash. Read the specific programme's terms rather than a figure quoted anywhere else, including here.
