Crypto.com's referral programme used to pay a $25 CRO bonus for a card lockup, capped at $2,000 a month. Both figures belong to a superseded structure.

Crypto.com has restructured its referral and card programme entirely. The earlier structure paid a referred person $25 in CRO for signing up and placing a lockup for a Crypto.com Visa card, with earnings of up to $2,000 in CRO per month from referrals. That described the CRO lockup era, and Crypto.com has since restructured both halves of it.

What replaced the lockup. The Level Up programme replaced the old coloured card tiers with four: Basic, Plus, Pro and Private. Crucially, Plus and Pro are now reachable by monthly subscription — US$4.99 and US$29.99 respectively — without locking up any CRO at all. Existing customers were transitioned automatically based on their prior lockup, with the option to keep the lockup or move to a subscription.

Card cashback by tier is the number that matters, and it starts at zero: Basic 0%, Plus 2%, Pro 3%, Private 4% at a US$50,000 threshold, and up to 5% at a US$500,000 threshold.

Do the subscription arithmetic before signing up for a tier. Plus at $4.99 a month is $59.88 a year. At 2% cashback, that fee is recovered only after about $2,994 of card spending in the year — and every pound of spend below that leaves you worse off than Basic. Pro at $29.99 a month is $359.88 a year; at 3%, break-even is roughly $11,996 of annual card spend. A paid rewards tier is a bet on your own future spending, and the honest way to evaluate it is to look at what you actually spent last year, not what you intend to spend next year.

What replaced the referral. The referral bonus is now up to $100 in CRO per friend, which is double the earlier per-friend limit — but it is tied to the new user's trading volume rather than to a one-off task.

That change is worth understanding rather than just noting, because it changes what kind of instrument the referral is. A one-off task bonus is paid for an action that happens once. A volume-linked reward is paid in proportion to how much the person you referred trades — which places Crypto.com's referral in the same family as the fee-share schemes elsewhere in this cluster, where your earnings rise with your friend's trading activity. It is a softer version, capped at $100 rather than running indefinitely, but it points the same direction: the more they trade, the more you make.

On being paid in CRO specifically. The reward is denominated in the platform's own token, which means its value moves with that token rather than with the dollar figure quoted. A "$100 in CRO" reward is a $100-worth-at-the-time-of-payment reward, and this project has documented repeatedly what happens when a reward is denominated in the issuer's own unit. Convert promptly if the dollar figure is what you want, and understand that doing so is itself a taxable event.

Which brings the tax point, as across this cluster. A reward paid in CRO is an acquisition of a virtual digital asset: cost basis at receipt, taxable disposal at a flat 30% plus 4% cess when converted, only acquisition cost deductible, no loss offset against other crypto, other income or future years, 1% TDS per transfer under Section 194S, and an entry in Schedule VDA. As a foreign platform, holdings also engage Schedule FA, which has no minimum value exemption.

The questions worth asking before any of this: what tier you would genuinely qualify for on last year's actual spending; whether a subscription tier breaks even at that level; and whether you want a reward whose value is set by the platform's own token.
